One minute idea
by Andrew on July 25, 2011
I’ve just joined University of York as the Head of Web Services. Last week we started a simple practice which aims to do two things:
- Get the team together every day
- Spend an hour each week working on something as a team
Each day, for one minute, a randomly selected member of the team pitches an idea that we should all work on for an hour that Friday. A vote decides what we do (or it should, we seemed to slide towards a particular idea this week).
This week we spent the hour looking at how puppet works by studying a module for one of our services.
I’m looking forward to seeing how this develops over the next few weeks, I’m certainly going to learn a great deal.

I’m liking the idea of meeting regularly. We started ‘cake club’. Every Wednesday we meet for half an hour. The team pre-populate an agenda. The chair (also responsible for bringing cake) manages time etc.
The focus is on ideas we come across outside of work and how we might apply them.

Cake is always a winner!
One minute idea seems to be going well. We’ve had 4 one hour sessions so far:
1. Reviewing a Puppet config for a service
2. Watching the Inbox Zero Google tech talk
3. Discussing “Eponymous laws” related to computing
4. A general security discussion

That blog is run by the Web Office. Our team doesn’t have much public information at the moment.
